I think you are being to extreme. If you look at Malows pyramid you will see that people have certain needs that we all tend to satisfy.
Looking for your needs before others is not wrong. It is nature to do to that. What is bad is if you do so at the expense of others with no regard to safety, life, respect for others, etc.
We can all work on our own need in harmony if we want to. Granted many do are selfish but there are many others that live life considering those around them they share space with.
What you describe of American as profound traits is not different than what you see in other countries. I have been in about 30 countries and so far humans are the same everywhere. Some are good, some are bad, some hate, some love, etc.
