When I was growing up on the farm, our dog would drag the cow's placenta up into the front yard & eat it.
Is this anything like that?
Yes, I believe it's very common among mammals to devour their own placentas, with the exception of humans. Even cows eat it despite being vegetarian. I think it's mostly to avoid predators?
I had no idea this went on in the US with people. If people are starving...maybe I can see it, but otherwise, no way.
When I lived in Africa some of the women who lived in rural areas did this because food was scarce. So, yeah, I get it if you are hungry and worried about producing milk for your newborn. However, if I need iron after I give birth, I will just eat some spinach and take a multi-vitamin. I see no reason for this if you aren't in the midst of a drought.

I'm trying to imagine what kind of texture extremely vascular, endometrial tissue would have. I'm guessing it would be completely unlike any sort of skeletal or cardiac muscle. Probably similar to liver.
I think you all have the image wrong. I have a friend who is eating her placenta, but it's not like she cooked it up and had it for dinner. She dehydrated it in a food dehydrator, then ground it into powder which she put into gel capsules. She takes a few capsules every day to help combat postpartum depression. The placenta is loaded with hormones that your body loses when you give birth. This is her second child, and she experienced severe depression after her first. This time she is feeling completely normal.
