Even the historical and sociological and cultural motivation for racism is a done deal, and warrants no further discussion.

If you did not say, nor allude, to any of that, I apologize for my misinterpretation, and eagerly away a clarification of exactly where you stand on lthe debatability those topics.
Actually, I believe I said we already know the facts about the holocaust, what happened and when, what's to debate? I never said we couldn't debate, I asked, what to debate.

If you really think, that I said I know who all the racists are, defined and categorized them, and refuse to debate with or about them, you're as wrong as betty crocker making collard greens.

.
Do you think all Civil War historians ought to quit their research, in fact, be forced to quit their research, because we already know all the facts about the Civil War? No more biographies of FDR, no more investigations of what happened in the Great Depression, no more analysis of what caused the stock market crash, because everything is already known about them?

Your 5th grade history books lied to you. It is not true that all history is already known and nothing remains to be learned. You need to start taking a look at what History is. It's not what you think it is.

Shocking as this will apparently be for some, "fixing" this forum area doesn't equate to "fixing" jt. So getting back to the original question......some tighter mod control I think could go a long way, not just in terms of zapping people for over-the-top personal attacks (ie as opposed to a brief remark made in the "heat of the battle") or trolling, but also for replies which seriously de-rail a topic, either in terms of the topic itself or when people digress into a "cat fight."

There is no shortage of good debate sites out there, the fact that CD debates has been reduced to a depository of moronic squabbles shows the need for a well moderated forum rather than this free for all wherein the posters create their own baiting, trolling, wingnut, debate agendas.

I think this is essentially correct. Since the site itself has decreed that special rules apply to Great Debates, but has failed to enforce them, I am in favor of a radical change for this forum: It should send all posts to a queue for moderation before being publicly posted. This may be impractical if the site has insufficient resources to do it, but I think it's the only real solution. True, it would slow things down, but the positives outweigh the negatives. Kiplinger (the financial site) has this system for comments to its articles.

Kiplingers has nowhere near the volume this site has. You are correct in that it sounds nice but is unworkable.

The only way to fix this forum is to delete it and never allow it to restart until they have found moderators capable of running it.

Which is why I raised the OP in the first place. It is not being moderated in a way that protects its stated principles. So the users who wish to retain the proper debate characteristics can have the same effect by collectively agreeing to uphold the debate standards. Namely:

There will be no tolerance for insulting other posters, personal attacks on politicians or others, and trolling. This is not the place for distorting your opponents' statements, one-liners, snarky posts, charged language, polls, nitpicking, chatter, tired jokes, or answering without reading the whole thread.

The above violations have been running rampant through the subforum, and last night four threads were closed---NONE of them for that violation.

Users who repeatedly violate the prohibitions outlined in the sticky, should be either ignored, or warned that their post is a violation. Warned by the faithful users, since there may not be anyone else to do it.

Maybe the moderators are running this forum exactly the way they see fit. To the consternation of some posters that believe their brand of demagoguery is the only way to run a forum.
