The problem is that hybrids and electric vehicles are only as "clean" as the source generating electricity. Let us not forget that it takes mined metals to produce those batteries as well.

"Green" is often only face deep.

I think this is a good thing and New York will be an interesting litmus test. I think that a better test would be a "personal-vehicle centric" commuter metroplex without a well developed and viable public transit system, like LA, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, etc. etc.

In other words, this is clearly a good thing but I'm not sure we learn much about the broader viability of plug-ins in NYC.

In 2008 Japan imported 209,089 short tons of coal they consumed 203,979 short tons mostly used for the @1,007.067 billion kwh they consumed They only generated @93.927 billion kwh total with renewables @70,000 of which is hydro.......
I wonder how they are chargeing thier batteries

Yes, but as another poster said, it is a step in the right direction.

There are pros and cons, but I do not see any pros (environmentaly speaking) with the conventional vehicle. We have "Clean Air" buses here and it is a pleasant novelty when you are walking behind them and do not have to hold your breath.

Japan uses extensive fuel cell technology, something the US does not do yet on a large scale. Guess what: NYC is not Japan!

If the grid will handle it I think pushing EV and hybrids in major metro areas is a good thing. However, it is disingenous to portray this as "green" as all energy has cost. With EV's andy hybrid plug-ins the batteries are NOT green.

Regular car batteries aren't made out of sunshine - and these will be recycled intensively, due to the expense of the materials.

Solar car charging stations at parking garages (or your own garage) are coming soon - what's not to love about that?

I think these upcoming plugin electric vehicles are going to be only useful for people in the suburbs who can plug their car in over night in their driveway and commute less than 40 miles round trip to work,people who now have to use street parking will have nowhere to plug in and definitely wont wait hours at some plug in center to get their car charged.So it may be good for some, not so good for others.And if your electricity bill increases more than it would cost to fill a normal car with gas to do the same commute then plug in vehicles arent going to sell well .
