Now we know: The first two plug-in cars from major manufacturers will go head-to-head on warranties and lease prices: $350 a month for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, $349 for the 2011 Nissan Leaf.
Now the choice shifts to other measures, including electric and overall range, as well as the plug-in perks that states like California offer to early adopters to encourage them to opt for electric cars.
Folks need to read the fine print in the tax code regarding EV & Hybrid purchases and the promoted refunds. Income level can negate the "refund" thus lengthening the pay-back period. The AMT is a b*tch!
Why buy a $41k Volt when you can buy a $49k Tesla?? The Tesla has 300 mile range... Volt only has 40 mile range on electric... if you don't care about electric, why not buy a 20k car that has better features than a Volt and prepay the extra 20k in gas money that you saved from not buying the Volt...
1) The Volt will not save you money...
2) The Volt will use electricity which is probably generated by coal and uses batteries that cause HUGE pollution in the mining for the battery elements... bottom line... the Volt will not be environmentally cleaner....
3) The Volt WILL reduce your consumption of foreign oil but for $9k more and buy a better car (the Tesla Model S), you will NOT need any foreign oil at all (well not by gasoline anyways)... even less CO2 production with the Tesla...
The Volt doesn't win in any combination... it won't save you money, it won't help the environment, and it won't reduce CO2 by as much as its competitor... the only way GM could of made the Volt a real game changer was price... they didn't... it will attract some people but maybe I am wrong like I was with iPad... still can't understand why anyone buys that crap... the people who I know that actually bought that crap stop using it a month later... No wonder Apple is so rich with customers like these...
I doubt the Volt is going to sell very well as its way too expensive.The Tesla maybe a better electric car but not very practical if we are talking about the 2 seater sportscar that sells for around $90K.

how about you post some studies backing up these assertions, as I don't think you have a clue what the "bottom line" is.

The Hummer could be seen as more environmentally friendly, in that it is such a utter POS that anyone who owns one would never, ever drive it, except on that rare occasion when Run DMC or 2 Live Crew is in town for a concert and there is hope that with enough bling on, some designer sunglasses, and a H2, one might be mistaken for an out of town rap artist. Other than that, the average H2 probably gets less than a few thoussand miles per year making it arguably more environmentally friendly than a Prius.
I bring up the Hummer as the "study" was done in a completely UNscientific manner - the company that released the report refused to disclose methodology, various data, etc.
It turned out that the entire premise was flawed, namely, that a Hummer would last for 250,000 miles while a Prius only for 100,000. Actually, it was even stupider than that, it wasn't that the rius wouldn't last, but that the owners would get tired of the vehicles (and presumably they would then be scrapped instead of being sold as used cars).
