Any suggestions of good "green" towns in the north east. I guess at this point we are looking for towns because the even the small cities (like Ithaca) have not impressed us. Even Middlebury Vermont has McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts!

For me this is less about the fact that the town govt put in an expensive solar setup than that there might be a great network of unconventionally CSAs or community gardens, lots of organic local food, etc. A disconnect from chain stores is a huge plus. Generally I feel like the rest probably follows. We have been sort of honing in on the Mad river valley in Vermont but want to make sure we are not missing anywhere else

In terms of location, I'd say up to 5 hours from NYC so pretty open there. Could be 5 hours south or west for all we care.

We see a lot of people changing their lifestyles to be more 'green'.

We belong to an Organic Farming group [MOFGA] and a large network of organic farmers and Farmer's Markets.

A nearby college town has a growing group call 'Sustainable Orono' looking at how they can change their community toward more sustainable methods. We have began attending their meetings even.

But even with these things going on, there are still McDs and box stores, scattered around.

In my township, I see homesteaders who are living completely off-grid, some on properties where the adjoining land-owners are all on-grid and completely unaware that their consumption may be a problem.
