SACRAMENTO, June 3 (UPI) -- The California state Senate has passed a measure to prohibit food vendors and restaurants from dispensing prepared foods in polystyrene foam.

Expanded polystyrene foam, commonly known as Styrofoam, used to package sandwiches, milkshakes and other food items for takeout, is a lightweight plastic that, when discarded, is often carried from streets through storm drains into the ocean.

That's funny. Rather than pick up their trash, the people vote to ban that type of container and force vendors to use a container they can litter with.

I was going to say, "Only in California", but I'm sure some of the other states that don't believe in personal responsibility will follow suit soon.

I support this; I see these containers discarded all over the place in DFW. Wish they'd ban them here.

Californians vote on everything, I'm surprised they haven't voted to repeal the Law of Gravity yet. Why does this upset you?

I'm waiting for California to just ban people and be done with the whole mess. Much simpler than laws that demand pop-up notes in a box of bolts "These bolts may contain a material that the State of Kalifornia has determined to cause cancer, and the guy packing them had peanuts for lunch."

Sure. Texas runs a few years behind California in a lot of things.

Once we finally get tired of living like filthy pigs, we will probably copy California in this, as well. But right now, this is sort of a teenager's room with the imagined claims of freedumbs and "you can't tell me what to do."

The trash that is not created never has to be cleaned up.

That's the problem they're trying to address. Too many people drop their trash onto the ground. (I remember when CA was clean. Not anymore.) All of that trash makes it's way to the storm drains where it goes STRAIGHT into the Pacific. The problem is so bad they've taken to stenciling the words "Drains to Ocean" at the storm drain entrances. (For those of you not familiar with CA there are storm drains everywhere in the populated areas.)

Some cities even put sand bags in front of the storm drain openings in the dry season to keep all that trash from going into the ocean. It's a horrendous problem. (I don't know how many plastic beer can loops I've picked up off the ground to keep them from going into the ocean.) I do not know why walking to a trash can is so darn hard for some people.
