Is there any chance you'd buy anything but a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or EV? This is brutal with the price of gasoline out there right now and the problems with refineries not looking to improve much in the near future....

Good choice - well established at this point, lots of options, pretty good fuel economy. I wonder though, what does a Prius hybrid offer me over something like the VW Golf or Passat TDI? I don't know much about their plug-in hybrid though...

I'd do some research on Car and Driver...They do road tests w/ really invaluable info.

I might try to get a Phoenix Motorcars pickup if they're reasonably priced and they'd sell me one.

No. I'm more comfortable with "tried and true" tech and the extra upfront cost doesn't appeal to me that much. The Prius ia a good car that's been around awhile but I don't like it myself. Gas prices go up and down and I don't drive that much so my POV will be different that some others. The fact is I might be looking for a new car in the next few months and I'll be looking for good, used Honda Civic or CRV.

Best time ever for Californians to lease a Nissan Leaf because in CA you still get a $2,500 check even when you lease! (with a minimum 36 month term) and the $7,500 federal tax credit is passed on to you from NMAC as a cap cost reduction

With the October programs you should be able to get a 36 month lease with $0 down for about $280/month including tax x36 months = $10,080 minus $2,500 rebate = $7,580 = $6.92/day or 21c/mile. Pretty great when you consider at current gas prices, the fuel alone for a petroleum car is about 16c/mile

I'd go with public transportation. But if I were somewhere that didn't have it? Honda Insight.

I would look for a used Prius with a good battery. Or a Prius with a dead battery for cheap and have the battery replaced/fixed. I would not buy a new car.

I would also consider a used Burgman 650 cc scooter as we are talking about "perfect" California.

I'm fine with my old Honda Civic and will drive it till it dies. And I have a little over 10 grand set aside for my next car and I'll use it to buy a used Prius instead of a low-end new car.
