Pretty cool. We pay parking meters with smart phones now. Obvious extension.

I saw a special on tv that recommended canister type wind turbines rather than the pinwheels that most people seem to be using. They were supposed to be more efficient and not kill birds. Does anyone know anything about these?

Modern wind turbines don't kill very many birds -- siting is better and the blades only turn at about 12 rpm. The bird can easily avoid these.

You are talking Vertical Axis? (the "pinwheel" ones are called Horizontal Axis).

Yes, they work. The real math is based on what is called "swept area." That is the actual area facing and getting hit by the wind.

Swept Area X by the Design Efficiency and you can compare outputs.

As far as birds . . . you know one of the largest man-made killers of birds are just plain glass windows? Not trying to minimize the issue, but been studying for a Raptor v. Windmills project.

Back towards the start -- you know we are required to put in electric backup generators for Gasoline stations along Hurricane Evacuation routes in the South? Sort of amuses me that Gasoline needs Electric Back Up.

I kind of liked the old hand crank pumps with glass jar gasoline filling pumps.

Not man-made, but they exist in large numbers because of man. Domestic cats are the largest killers of birds, by far.

The 1st & 2nd generation wind turbines out in places like the California Altamont Pass did have problems:

Poor siting
Towers provided perches for birds
High speed blades were hard for birds to see.

None of those conditions exist with current generation turbines.

There were two problems there:
1. They built those wind generators in a migratory route. There would have been hundreds of birds hitting those towers even if the blades were not turning.
2. The early wind generators turned at MUCH higher rpm's than the current ones do.

Those two problems have been eliminated in wind farms throughout the Midwest. The number of birds killed by current wind generators is virtually non-existent.
