They sound great for home electrical storage where daily recharging occurs. Although available commercially, seems plans should be available for an avid backyard solar type to submerse nickel and iron sheets in an alkaline bath. I even have an older solar charge controller with a Fe-Ni(OH)x setting.
If your lucky enough to tour Scotty's Castle in DVNP, he installed a huge row of about 100 of these batteries. I wonder if they still work?
