To me, the simplest way to reduce fossil fuel usage and carbon dioxide output would be to implement a much higher gas tax so that gas would be $6.00 or $7.00 a gallon. This would be so much more effective and efficient in comparison to alternative energy or bio fuels. Why do environmentalists not push for this?

There are people that are for this idea.

Fortunately most people realize how silly it is so it never got much traction.

Well for starters there's the fact that it would hurt the economy. And poor people would be hurt the most.

Well lets see.....

Transportation costs go up, so what consumers pay for everything goes up... Like paying $10.00 a gallon for milk? $15.00 a pound for butter? $18.00 a pound for organic apples?

Airline costs would skyrocket so would the cost of tickets...

What little money people have left over from their paychecks would be even further diminished due to higher fuel costs driving to and from work...

Heating oil costs in the winter, less people will be able to afford heat, more people will die...

So who winds up benefiting from higher gas taxes?

The progressive liberal elitists of course....

They do, and every time they do their idiotic ideas are shot down by lawmakers with common sense.

And some people wonder why environmentalists are despised, here's the classic example why with their loony ideas....

The Europeans have used tax to shape fuel consumption for many years. It's effective. Republicans don't like taxes.

Is that why the EU is starting to crack apart at the seams right now?

Also lets not forget the driving habits and traveling distances are quite different between the EU and the United States.....

Living in LA: Hey! lets jump on our bicycles and go to Las Vegas for the day.....

No, the EU is struggling with a dysfunctional governing system at the financial level. Ultimately they need to form a United States of Europe with a strong central government. As we found out early on, weak central government doesn't work well.

They aren't in many European countries, particularly Germany

Bicycle travel is the fastest growing form of commuting in several cities in the United States. In Washington DC the Capital Bike Share programs has 100 to 200 thousand bike trips per month.

Politically tax increases won't fly. An exception is cigarette taxes. Even raising it to cover all the roads construction costs would be a tall order.
