I usually get a couple of infestations per year of very small black ants, seems they come from outside through cracks around the back door, i usually deal with them by filling a spray bottle with a mixture of half water half bleach and spray the area where they enter the house, after a few hundred or thousand of them are littered about the door area they ultimately get the message that what ever food source they are going after the death and carnage they have to endure just aint worth the effort .
My house was an ant convention, spraying does nothing because the species eventually develop an immunity to it .the best is clove powder it doesnt kill them they cant stand the smell or taste , just go down to your grocery store and buy a small pack for a few bucks and sprinkle it where ever you see ants, its perfectly safe for pets and kids , after week or so you will not see a single ants anywhere.I guarentee it!!
I am always a little nervous to use borax with kids and pets in the house. I read about a study in a journal regarding natural ways to get rid of ants. It is a little unorthodox but it has worked flawlessly for me over the past few summers. Here is a short video detailing the same ingredients that I use:

When I asked people here in Vegas about fire ants I got this strange look, people have no idea what they are...
Always seemingly having an ant problem in South Texas I came across this and thought it could come in handy for others. The author lists deterrents as well as methods for killing the entire mound....
