Fuel cells would be straight electric. I think the issue will be life cycle costs of fuel cell vs battery. I'd suggest we can't know that answer yet. Let's encourage both and see what wins.

If you are concerned with methanol I certainly hope you don't drink diet sodas.

Yes it sounds like a commune to me. I love the idea. There are several successful communes in the US that have lasted for over 40 years. The only funny part sort of is that they have to sell their products to us regular folks for some of their income. I dunno maybe it is not funny.

I want to go live at one for a week at some point. I would love to see the commune system expanded and used more as an ideal for the poor and lower middle class to become stable and find ways to share to save money. I find it interesting that often the concepts for co-housing end up being filled by only the rich or upper middle classes.
