DES MOINES, Iowa — Clean-burning ethanol may have a smoggy secret.
If power companies are to be believed, the only one way to keep up with the fast-growing ethanol industry is to invest in good old fashioned coal-fired electricity. It's a line of logic that some say turns ethanol's clean burning appeal on its head.

I agree, Ethanol isn't environmentally or economically a good renewable energy source.
a) the energy in / out equation doesn't work out well (coal, fuel, labor, etc.)
b) the cause of inflated food, gas, and livestock prices unless they can make it without using raw food products
c) requires tons of government subsidies and tax incentives
Kind of funny in that all of above is 100 percent correct. Why are they plowing ahead? Also extremely corrosive takes special piping, loaded with water.your tax money pay's,subsidizes to the tune of $1.37 per gallon!!
I kind of have a moral issue with ethanol. 4000 people starve to death every hour. The idea of turning food into gas is pretty asinine in the face of that. I understand that life as we know it pretty much revolves around the car, but humans got by for thousands of years before they knew about dead dinosaurs.
many cities pretty much refuse to put forth any kind of public transportation, and when they do it is pretty inconvenient. while cars may be important, they are more of a convenience that we as a society have made necessity. I think we could do a lot to "green up" by kicking the car addiction as much as possible.
Plus with obesity as high as it is, a bit of walking couldn't hurt any of us.
