Our local transfer stations have a place to dispose of hazardous waste, some items for a fee. others free. In addition, the county will have events at a local high school on a Saturday where we can bring it and again, some have a fee. Common hazardous wastes in the home include paints, solvents, medicines, ammunition, tires, cleaning products, old gas and oil, batteries, pesticides and herbicides, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, smoke detectors, computers, monitors and TVs.
Hazardous waste is used oil, old paint (unless you allow it to dry out, then you can just throw it in the trash), dead batteries (yes, including Tesla battery packs), old electronic items, old tires, old medicines, rotten gasoline, painted wood(can't be burned), etc.
every year there is a hazardous waste collection where such items can be disposed of free of charge. the city/county collects the stuff and disposes of it properly.
