Rats or mice, yes, squirrels may be protected in the area and not legal to kill. If they are getting into your home crawl spaces and walls, you have to find out where and close the gaps. Moth balls is a great idea and I have used them before to deter squirrels. I would use moth balls right away and then, asap, seal the openings where they are getting in. Where there is one, there is a 100. They will just keep coming and coming.
