Under developed nations (and preppers) can make use of a simple water filter made of clay & rice husks. Pots are made of this clay/rice husk mix, thrown in the traditional way. When fired, the rice husk burns off, leaving microscopic pores. The inside of the pot is then coated with silver nitrate, a cheap and effective anti-bacterial, sterilizing the water as it flows thru.

Pretty cool. I like low tech solutions.
