Interesting...heard on the news today that this year, as a nation, we used 1% less gasoline (measured during an 8 month period) than we did last year (measured during an 8 month period). Technically, just due to population growth, they say we should be using 1% more each year. So that's a positive.
Also...60 teams have signed on (with...I forget the name of the organization...sorry) to create a production-ready 100 mpg vehicle. Should be interesting.

that does sound positive. but people are just driving less because gas is getting too expensive. If gas was $1.50 per gallon, we wouldn't be using any less.

You are probably right on. I wish it was proven that we really were making a conscious effort to be more conservative. Maybe something will happen with the 100 mpg car!

yeah, I wish e would take more effort to conserve also. Maybe it's the cynical pessimist inside my head, but I am pretty much convinced that we won't make any changes until we absolutely have to. It's human nature to resist change, especially when it comes to addictions like cars.
One of the people who has been on this quest for some time is Dean Kamen. His contributions continue to forge in new directions. The link referenced below connects one of the most promising electric vehicles scheduled for production in the near future with Kamen's dream of a perpetual motion heat-based power generating engine.
We just moved and my husband shortened his commute.
His commute wasn't bad - about 25 minutes - but now it's 15 minutes. We were living in a dense suburban area, but moved in very close to the city center now. Shrinking our carbon footprint and lessening his commute were big deciding factors for us.
So maybe we helped that 1% a little?
