I am researching recycling bins and I am not finding a lot of information about them. I have read several articles, blogs, comments, and forums regarding plastic pollution being an issue. However, I have seen many conversations about the recycling bins themselves. I would like to see those changed to be more realistic regarding the effects of marine life. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Why does a recycling bin need to be made of something else?

How many plastic recycling bins are thrown into the ocean, thereby possibly affecting marine life?

If the plastic recycling bins are not in the ocean, how do they affect marine life?

Suggest those questions be answered before one proposes changes.

Exactly. It's not the plastic, it's how we dispose of it that counts. On the other thread I posted facts & figures showing "landfills" are a very good solution and do not significantly affect the environment, contrary to popular myth. By burning it, we could re-purpose it into energy.

The plastic that winds up in the oceans, for the most part, gets there from the inappropriate handling of loads heading for re-cycling. (citation also on the other thread)

Penn & Teller had a TV show episode that demonstrated the folly of re-cycling plastic https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...0&&FORM=VRDGAR

(caution-- a lot of four-letter language)

ps/ I wonder how many ac of Amazonian Rainforest could have been bought and preserved with the money wasted on plastic re-cycling and movies about global warming?

Pardon the incoherence. It is his first post after all. However, going to extremes is not all that uncommon.

On the contrary.

He asked pertinent questions: before panicking over "plastic in the oceans," shouldn't we first establish some evidence that harm is being done by it?

And if we make recycling containers out of some other material, how will that keep the new containers out of the ocean and causing some harm themselves?

He sounds like a good, analytical thinker; not a naive, emotional reactor.

-an interesting, short read- a "letter to the editor" format-- be sure to read the Comments- usually from engineers & scientists with real world experience in the matter

Summary- recycling is generally uneconomical, stupid from the "Environmental" standpoint and could become economical & smart if the paradigm were changed, with suggestions explained.
