I don't think people realize how much food and water you have to have to actually survive. Your 2 pepper plants in your suburbia back yard is not going to cut it. For power you would almost certianly have to have access to a moving water source for hydro, solar and wind are fickle your going to be constantly managing power worried about your fridge kicking off trading power between the fridge and the AC unit etc. You would need a massive bank of batteries and a small solar farm to actually go off grid.
Take your weight and divide it by 2 and that's how many ounces you need per day.
Probably at least 12 batteries would be better and at least 2,000 watts of solar to be able to keep a regular fridge running 24/7. I've seen this girl cooking with a small solar set up.
The good thing is, as long as you have water, a lot of people can easily survive without food for a good 30 to 90 days. People water fast all the time. Most of the US population is obese, so I bet most people could survive no less than 5 months without food as long as they have access to good water.
a human can survive for about 3 weeks without any food, maybe a few days more, I don't think what size one is makes much difference. 3 weeks and your internal organs start shutting down, your stomach will start consuming its own lining.
Bobby Sands the IRA hunger striker lived for 66 days but that was under medical supervision, most wont last anywhere near that long.
5 months? wishful thinking.

I thought you said that was wishful thinking? That's a false statement.
under medical supervision it is possible but under normal circumstances-without hospital treatment- the normal life expectancy is around 3 weeks, a month at the outside, by which time someone would be too weak to do anything or go anywhere.
3 weeks is the normal length of time quoted without ingesting any food in a survival situation.

This is correct. The rule of thumb is, you can last 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food.

She can do laundry and all kinds of stuff with a very small system. I wouldn't recommend such a small system. I like to have cold A/C.
Are we talking about survival or are we talking about maintaining a certain lifestyle? i suspect these numbers are hyped and that when the rubber met the road the AC unit would not be keeping up and you would be sweating and uncomfortable OR the fridge would kick off.
Are we talking about skirting the edge of starvation or having a nice steak from time to time and your coffee and omlete?

Just being able to deal with an extended power outage that lasted weeks or months. Think of the people who had to deal with Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Something of that caliber.

The hurricane is likely going to destroy your panels and your house, thats why it was such a big deal.
