I've been wanting to start hanging my clothes instead of using the dryer, but have 2 issues. The main one is that one of my sons has pretty severe allergies. My other son has hay fever, but the severe guy can get asthma attacks on top of it. I live in Northern Michigan, so we don't have a ton of pollen, but I was wondering if anyone WITH allergies hangs their clothes outside to dry, and if it's a big deal or not. My kids are always outside anyway, so it doesn't seem like it'd be that big of an issue, but I've heard others mention this as a reason to avoid clothes lines. Once the trees are done with pollen season is it safe to hang them out?
Also, I dried them inside some during the winter next to the wood stove, but got complaints from DH that the clothes were in the way, and from my sons that they were too stiff. Any ideas on how to "convert" the rest of the family? Any other tips? With 2 growing active boys we do a ton of laundry. Also, I get no support from DH, so how do I go about geting a line put up outside easily by myself? I'm thinking of tying it between trees.... Any good knots to use? Ideas? Thanks.
I have allergies in Charlotte, so no way I could use a clothesline. I also had hayfever growing up in MI. Get an energy efficent dryer, dontate your current one to get a tax deduction and you'll be set.
I don't get it, what does allergies have to do with hanging clothes outside. I have been using a clothesline all my life. yes, I do have allergies, like who doesn't. But I just dont understand, that if you use a dryer they will go away....

The pollen gets all over your clothes, sheets, towels
You can't have allergies to bad if you can sleep on sheets that have been covered in pollen
Oh just noticed your in Brooklyn..you may not have as much pollen floating around as you don't have as many trees as someone out in tim buc too

You don't live in the south...right now we can literally see the pollen on cars and buildings. If you have a black car, it is green/yellow right now. It's also common out west where there is more woods/forests.

I'm in North West NJ and my black car is green it's so covered....blech...don't want that nasty stuff on my clothes let alone my sheets!!!

Have you considered just shaking it off. That would feed two birds with one meal...you'd get rid of the pollen and you'd also get a great workout in the process. No need to go to the gym on laundry day!

That would actually give me a migraine....I'm am very sensitive to pollen...so standing in a cloud of it really wouldn't work for me.

I'm only half kidding, and I have experienced seasonal allergies in previous years. I recently discovered an enzyme called Serrapeptase that has helped me tremendously with sinus issues. So far this pollen season, I've had no congestion or headaches.
