Evacuated solar tubes wouldn't be my first choice. Nature doesn't like vacuums. Flat panel are less expensive and less problematic. Solar anything is good, as is geothermal, but your costs will vary by region and state programs will make a big difference in the payback period on your investment.

Some places its worthwhile, and others you'll never get a full payback. You need to tell us your needs instead of ranting about SUVs if you want a better answer than that.

In general, the maintenance and life-span issues of flat panel and evacuated tubes aren't much different. And there aren't many places solar thermal doesn't pay off, rebate or no rebate - even the the cool, cloudy maritime Pacific Northwest, BC and Alaska they pay off (and within the expected life of the panels).
