Currently, power transmission over distance is a MAJOR real world limitation of physics. There is a reason they build power generation plants near the sources of use.
Possible breakthroughs in new materials (nano-tubes) might help solve this in the future but for now it's not viable.

Not 100% sure. It's just more a function of the properties of the available materials. I don't think they will solve this without a breakthrough in materials science. Carbon nano-tubes seem to do the trick but are still in the tiny tiny lab stage.
Actually we build coal fired power plants a LONG way from the load because it is more efficient and/or cheaper to ship the electricity than the fuel. Modern 750 KV AC and DC transmission lines are efficient and will become the backbone of the "all electric" society we are becoming.
With the advent of the "wind myth" and NIMBY when it comes to transmission The move has been towards distributed generation and away base load...... We'll be sorry......Well some of you will be.

Just drill holes through the Earth to shorten the distane. As a side benefit we can pick up some geothermal on the way.
Let's say in the future this did actually come about, harnessing the sun for energy. What will the electric companies do? They have all the money now to buy the rights. Will they make us go through them still to receive it? Ever give any thought to how much they will charge then?!
What about the repercussions of energy coming off the sun? We won't be around to worry, but will it force the sun to go nova? Or reverse nova.

The sun is putting out the energy no matter what we do so it would have no impact on the sun.
Solar power requires some infrastructure. If you want to you can build your own solar set-up today but it won't be cheap. Your fears of the "electric companies" seems conspiracy nutty...but go ahead and build your own system if you want.
P.S. They will likely charge what it costs to operate and make a profit.
Good point about distance. I was only considering continental scales involved in moving solar electricity from the southwest to the north central regions. We really do not have a very high capacity method of transferring energy across oceans.
I guess no one really mentioned that the entire underlying story and concept was hype and a scam?
