Maybe the next time you can ask for a to go container too, and when they bring styrofoam ask if they have a more environmentally friendly packaging? That way you aren't saying anything directly to your friend that would offend, but bring up the subject all the same. If you think the person would be offended I wouldn't say anything directly to them though. On the other hand maybe they just don't think about it. My sister a few years ago commented on my leaving the water running while brushing my teeth, and ever since then I don't do it. Just never thought about it. May be the case with your friend.

I like that idea . They are the source of the packaging, after all. Now I'll just have to track down the other near dozen restaurants my friend frequents .

I voted yes because I've been in a similar situation and I talked to both my friend and the restaurant manager. When we ordered lunch, and the usual takeout box, I told the waitress that we didn't need it and presented him with a set of nifty multi-compartment reusables wrapped with a bow on the spot. The waitress thought it was really cool, and went to get the manager. I talked to the manager for awhile, and that restaurant is now using the recyclable aluminum-foil take out bowls (not ideal, but better than styrofoam) and the plastic serviceware is now the biodegradable type.

I don't think mentioning things (at least once) can ever be a bad thing. Just like the only stupid question is the one you never ask, the only stupid facts are the ones you don't diseminate. Lots of people really aren't aware of the environmental impacts of thier choices or what (relatively painless) alternatives are out there. It doesn't give you a license to harp on people, but mentioning it once is hardly rude.
