Where I live they have always had scrap yards, anything metal or has metal in it. White items like appliances for example you could sell to them. Cars etc. Not sure if they take electronics, I know they'll take TV's. If you separate into different metals you can get a lot more. Depends on the going rate is but you might get like $10 to $20 for pickup load of appliances. You're not going to get rich but some guys do it for the money and we'll even pick the items up for a small fee.
Some of the cities/towns around here run a spring cleanup, what they'll do is have a different days for different items. Any really large items, sofas etc. Works well cause they won't end up getting dumped somewhere. They'll have one day for metal and appliances. They make money that day, I believe it pays for a good portion of the the whole cleanup.
