dc-Random suggested I start a new thread in hopes of getting responses to the following:
would y'all please comment on these stats:
According to city-data, the crime indices for Greensboro for 2007 and 2008 were 614.2 and 586.9, compared to a U.S. average of 320.9.
Here are the crime index numbers for some other NC cities (same years):
Cary: 125.0 and 120.2
Charlotte: 648.0 and 589.2
Durham: 567.1 and 522.2
High Point: 553.3 and 519.4
Raleigh: 339.0 and 342.0
Winston-Salem: 616.0 and 604.2
All other things being equal (which, sadly, they never are), I'd rather live someplace such as Cary where the crime index is approximately 40% of the national average instead of someplace where it's nearly double the U.S. average. On the other hand, when compared to some other cities with populations >100k, Greensboro doesn't seem too bad.
St. Louis: 1158.6 and 1081.5
Memphis: 962.9 and 949.4
Little Rock: 909.2 and 775.6
Birmingham: 939.2 and 927.2
Washington, D.C.: 670.3 and 675.9 (I expected these #s to look more like BHM's)
If we accept that the city-data numbers are correct, why do folks protest that Greensboro really doesn't have a crime problem? Is crime mainly confined to one area that most people know to avoid? Is it that property crimes, such as theft, are far more common than violent crimes?
Finally, one thing I've noticed when looking at apartments in Greensboro is that few seem to offer garage parking, either in a multi-level building adjacent to the residences or in individual garages. That would be a security concern for me, plus I'd rather not deal with 120+ car temps in the summer or icy windshields in the winter. Are there apartment
complexes, or condos, available for rent in the nicer areas that have garages? Or would someone have to rent a house instead? A house w/ 2 car garage would be preferred, but an apartment w/ covered (& preferably assigned) parking would be okay, too. Let's assume a price range of $700 - 1,100/mo.
TIA!
