We just had our existing hardwood floors sanded and then refinished and they turned out great...the problem is we now have a kerosene smell ONLY when we turn on the stove or I use the toaster oven and when we use our clothes dryer ( which is not on hardwood floors) this smell is overwhelming and almost sickening. My clothes dryer has now got the smell in the stainless tub and my clothes now smell like this...If ANYONE has had this problem, please let me know. Thanks

I don't have a solution...

Maybe place this post in the "House" forum?

Good luck, the smell must be awful to live with!

Maybe the flooring guys put a mineral spirits soaked towel in the dryer for some weird reason. Besides that I have never heard of such a problem.

I agree with anitajas, this may need a forum specific to housing as an expert may be there.

But, I will say this, and I am not an expert nor am I giving you consultation as I do not want to be liable (I may be wrong), but the thing that these items all have in common is that they are electrical. Maybe, for whatever reason and God knows how, some of the shellac/stain/mineral spirits soaked through and got on some wiring. I mean the wiring inside the walls or floors or however your wires run as I am not privy to this information. Therefore, when you use an item affected by this line(s), or circuit(s), the wires will naturally heat up. And, if any chemical is on that wire and the wire is hot, naturally it is going to burn and give off a scent.

These items should be on their own circuit as they are major electrical draws, but my guess is that the common denominator is electrical; thus, the wiring.

I would talk to an electrician.

We are having the same exact problem! Our dryer, toaster oven and oven all smell really bad after having our hardwood floors refinished. Did you ever find a solution to fix the problem? THanks much!

Has anyone asked the company that re-surfaced your floors? What do they have to say?

We have hardwood floors and I'd like to have them professionally refinished, at some point, so I'm curious about this issue.

Sounds dangerous to me.
