More apartments planned for downtown area. Former Guilford County commissioner Skip Alston is planning an 84 unit apartment complex just south of downtown off of South Eugene St. The site is in close proximity to the South Elm/Lee St project. The apartment complex will be gated and will have a clubhouse and picnic area. Rents will range from $650 per mo to $850 per mo.
Yes. Its seems that we are seeing a mini downtown development boom and the vast majority of development we are seeing is apartment projects. Skip Alston's project is a welcome addition to the area because it helps clean up property surrounding the South Elm/Lee St project. More residential in the area also helps encourage the development of more retail and restaurants in the South Elm St project. The Asberry apartment project will be located near land being looked at for the downtown University District and the downtown Greenway. We are beginning to see urban development south of Lee St and it appears this is the direction that downtown is expanding. I have already noticed on city zoning maps that a number of properties south of Lee Street is zoned Central Business District which mean Lee Street is no longer the southern boundary of downtown. One piece of property zoned central business district is two blocks south of Lee Street. The downtown boundaries could potentially expand half a mile south of Lee Street in the future, particularly with the growth of the University District.
