Don't believe everything you think. According to this rational, there must be as great a need for this level of care or treatment in Los Angeles, Columbus, Oklahoma city, Atlanta, and Knoxville. These cities, and Winston-Salem, are the six cities nationwide that have two medical centers offering higher levels of care. This designation does not mean there are more stroke victims in these cities, it means they have a higher level of care and treatment.
This thread, Sir, has nothing to do with population, but the quality of healthcare available for the "Triad." If these other cities are 17 times larger than Winston-Salem in population, I'd say the designation made for the two medical centers in Winston-Salem only makes Winston-Salem look that much more desirable.
I don't see this quality of healthcare available as a duplication of services, but rather as perhaps healthy competition. Your views can be critically positive as in the glass half full....or negative and nearly empty.
Look at it this way: There's only one Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center in NC, and that's in Chapel Hill. Only 41 hospitals in the nation have this designation. Clearly there's a demand for these services, and I am proud that Winston has two high-quality hospitals that are able to rise to the challenge. Clearly the rest of the southeast has the need for these centers too. Not sure why other hospitals haven't tackled this.

Two such centers in one medium sized city implies either a LOT of localized demand
(the perhaps too subtle point of my original post) or a wasteful duplication of services.
