this article lists Winston as number 6 considering it has double the national crime rate. That is interesting to me. I live in Clemmons and usually spend my free time in west Winston around the mall, and downtown area and never feel unsafe. I know there are rougher areas of the city so I usually stay away from that.
Like every other city on Earth, Winston-Salem has rougher areas where there is substantially higher crime. Even in the more dangerous areas there is very little random crime...most of it is related to drugs and domestic disputes.

The key being the types of crime. If the area is high in violent crimes take heed, but petty crimes can take place anytime, anywhere and you are most likely just going to lose some stuff as opposed to your life.

My husband and I are considering a move to Winston Salem, NC. Can someone give an update on crime, healthcare and what you think overall of the city? We are considering it for a number of reasons but it seems to be a great place to live. Would just like to get some opinions.

Healthcare remains quite good (two large and excellent hospitals, which are among the largest employers in the city and provide care to patients throughout the region). Crime is highly dependent on where you live. Violent crime is concentrated in a few neighborhoods, and I doubt you're considering any of them. There are some good neighborhoods close to downtown (West End, Ardmore, Buena Vista) but these areas sometimes experience a higher level of petty property crime (car breakins, etc) due to proximity to some of the dodgier areas.

Downtown has been heavily redeveloped in the last decade and gets nicer with more options all the time. There are good performing arts opportunities, thanks to the UNC School of the Arts and other arts organizations. There's a nice non-profit art house movie theater downtown and good restaurants, etc. D Salem is a living museum that's fun to walk through. Safer neighborhoods are generally to the West and northwest of downtown. Suburbs such as Lewisville, Clemmons, and Advance are very safe.

We love Winston and are raising small kids here with no concern for anything you mentioned.

I lived there from 2000 to 2008 and loved it. Its a great size city with lots of dining, arts, entertainment and shopping options, decent traffic, great neighborhoods, good access to the mountains, etc. Both Novant and NC Baptist are outstanding healthcare companies.

My son befriended an elderly couple living in Alamance County, NC (was out driving around looking for land and met them) - and got to talking about the area. Very rural - looked nice - but he learned that there was a lot of crime that you wouldn't expect. Lots of break-ins, drug related crime, etc. Pays to research and it's a shame that you have to worry about this stuff these days. My rule of thumb is that if I drive through a town and see iron bars on the convenience store... I keep driving...

Pretty small town to only have one convenience store.
Moving where you have more shopping choices would probably be better.

What does Alamance County have to do with Winston-Salem?
