So I was reading a thread about Winston-Salem saying how the city has lost a few companies such as Dell Inc.,RJR,& Hanesbrands. Last time I checked I did see that The Dell Computer plant is no longer in Winston-Salem, But as for RJR & HanesBrands they are still in the city or has some things changed??

The Dell plant was short lived, so short it never made employment capacity. Reynolds Tobacco and Hanesbrands are still around.
The Dell plant was not the headquarters. Hanesbrands is headquartered here. Others include Krispy Kreme, BB&T, Garner Foods (makers of Texas Pete), and Lowes Foods.
Hanesbrands IS the parent company. Hanes is a subsidiary along with Champion, Playtex, Bali, L'eggs, Wonderbra, and as of last summer, Maidenform. Expected 2014 FY sales just under $5.1 billion. 50,000 employees worldwide.
Of the 100 largest companies in NC, there is also Hatteras Financial, and two huge credit unions, Truliant and Allegacy. Otherwise, I would add GMAC Insurance, Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, K&W Cafeterias, Lowes Foods, Dewey's Bakery, Primo Water, Targacept, and IMG College Sports.
There is not just one Hanes family, but several, and all are descendents of either John Wesley Hanes or Pleasant H. Hanes, who each started their own mills back around the turn of the century. Both the sock making and underwear mills were merged with the hosiery mills to form Hanes Companies (today's Hanesbrands), which with the expection of Hanes Dye and Finishing run by another descendent Ralph Philip Hanes and then his son R. Philip Hanes Jr., were in 1979 bought out in a hostile purchase by Sara Lee.
Sara Lee, based in Chicago, spun off its Hanes holdings about 10 years ago to focus on its food products and not textiles. Since then, Hanesbrands headquarters and divisions have returned to Winston-Salem where they were born (and returned to profitability I might add).
Hanes Dye & Finishing is still run by a local family member, but HanesBrands is the big boy and the Fortune 500.
