So I've been to Winston before, though it was long long time ago. Even though I haven't been in forever and went primarily for Old-Salem, I just love Winston so I'm going to take a day trip next week.
What in Winston should one visit? I like outdoor activities, Walkable neighborhoods, window shopping, greenways, etc.
For walking/greenways:
I recommend the Strollway that connects Old Salem to Downtown W-S
And the Greenway that goes from Old Salem out to and around Salem Lake
There's too much for one day. You'll have to come back for repeat visits. Enjoy!
--Stop in for a cold one at Foothills Brewery on 4th Street.
--Grab a cup of coffee at Krankie's on E. 3rd Street. Beans roasted on site!
--Ronnie's Country Store, located on Cherry St. about a block north of the Benton Convention Center. It's a throwback in every way, with boxes of fresh produce out front (they'll have mountain apples this time of year), bins of dried beans and penny candy, local honey, jam, pickles, etc., and whole country hams hung up to cure in the back. It's a fun place to explore.
Note that a big chunk of that greenway is temporarily closed for road construction, so there's a detour that takes you through the WSSU campus.
Oops - I forgot about that. Thanks! The OP could drive out to Salem Lake and walk around (6.9 mi) the lake. Pretty all year round, especially in Oct. Next week will be a little early for color, though.

Good recs. If one were feeling particularly ambitious, you could start at the top of Trade, maybe grab a bite at Mary's (if the line's manageable it's worth it), take a quick detour to Ronnie's, then head back over to Trade for a stroll through the Arts District. and either a jaunt down 4th St. and into the West End (with a stop for a pint at Foothills?) or straight down to the strollway, under Business 40 and into Old Salem.

Yep. Definitely a pretty place for a walk, especially on a crisp day.
Moved to Winston-Salem area from Charlotte (4th Ward) 3 years ago. Not sure if you are into museums...but there are probably more in W-S than Charlotte. Winston-Salem had the very 1st Arts Council in the US...definitely the cultural center on the Triad.
Enjoy Winston-Salem.
