Hello...we are considering a move to Eden, NC...not sure what it's like. Anybody have any suggestions / thoughts on the area?

I have only visited NC briefly - it's very beautiful but not sure I want to move.

We have young children & I'm really concerned about the schools in the area...

Default Eden

I live about an hour north of Eden in Roanoke VA. Eden is a lovely little town with a "Mayberry" type feel. The region has beautiful lakes(Smith Mountain Lake in VA), mountains about an hour away, growing urban areas in NC(about an hour away). While Eden and Rockingham County are more rural one can probably find good deals on land down there as well in Henry Co. VA. While the immediate area has been hit by layoffs recently I feel the region will bounce back soon and a major manufacturer will one day locate there. I have heard rumors of a major auto plant? A good choice in my opinion to relocate!

Well, Eden is close to Reidsville, and Reidsville has "Short Sugars" absolutely some of the finest bar-be-que you will ever eat. North Carolina does take it's bar-be-que seriously. Reidsville will also have the closest hospital to Eden. Rockingham county is not known for sterling educational facilities. Nearby Henry Co. Virginia is a truly depressed area and schools are not of an equal quality with even the poorer N.C. school districts. Yes, land is cheap. Suspect that either farther North, in the neighborhood of Roanoke, better schools, beautiful scenery, or farther South, between Greensboro and Durham, Raleigh, Burlington, Graham, Hillsborough area. Orange County schools in N.C. are first rate, something to do with the proximity of several famous Universities, a well-educated section of the state, many good hospitals and a growing economy. Oops! I forgot one little thing, it seems that the entire state of North Carolina has this thing for Basketball, college hoops are big! Suspect it has to do with the Atlantic Coast Conference.

You SHOULD definately be concerned about the schools in the area. Maybe there's a decent private school there. I don't know. It is a very depressed area not far from Danville, Va and about the only place I know of to work is the Miller brewery. Fieldcrest Cannon closed up as well as many other businesses. The last time I went to the mall there it was mostly just vacant store fronts. It's a sad little town since the textiles have left. I'd think twice about moving there or at least spend a good deal of time there before making such a big move. Just my opinion.....

Thanks for your all your input. The cost of houses seems unbelievably great...beautiful homes at a reasonable price.
Still concerned about the schools & will continue to look into that. Anybody know how family oriented the area is?
We also have other offers to consider but this area seems beautiful...

The quote about Eden being like Mayberry is FAR from true.
Eden once WAS the Garden of Eden but is now the Ghetto of Eden!
Drug addicts are roaming the streets 24/7 in search of something to steal.
If they do not get an easy target from your lawn/garden/shed during the day they found they can do whatever they please between 12-5 A.M.
I made the mistake of buying there and have been robbed twice in 1 year in addition to vandalizism before that.
The last time they not only took garage things but stripped plumbing and wires.
The police of course made a report.
The vandalizism I did not even bother the Police since the rest of the neighborhood just threw up their hands and went on. They knew NOTHING will ever get done.
If Mayberry where full of low lifes and had a Police force of Barney Fifes then you could compare.

I forgot to mention that in addition to the crime and drug problem the local Morehead Hospital is a joke.
I would request an ambulance to take me to Babtist if they could make it since if I am close to death Morehead would want me shipped out anyway so they can have it on record you died under someone elses watch since they are usually at the max allowed themselves.

And if they way the kids dress, speak, & act are a reflection of the schools then they cannot be great either.
Of course with the number of drug addicts getting money from the state and STILL having to steal from the hands that feed them it is a very good possibility their off-spring are a result of in-breeding since all they care about is more drugs, momentary self gratification and absolutly nothing else they will have sex with ANYTHING that can get them high.
I have also had several protitutes pass by my place. A couple of sickening propositions and one stopped to pee on my sidewalk.
But maybe you could afford to life in a better part of Eden where the police might even pass by sometime during the night.
