My parents have lived in the Baltimore/DC Metro region now for thirty years and are considering retirement in the next two to three years. They're eyeing NC for numerous reasons. My mother is wondering how far away the mountains are from Greensboro. Also, is Greensboro a good spot for retirees? In other words, are there activities and whatnot available for senior citizens?
Thank you in advance!

A couple of hours.

You can see where the Mountain Region is on this map in relation to Guilford County:

Greensboro to Asheville is 2 hours, 45 minutes or 172.58 miles, Greensboro to Cherokee is 3 hours, 45 minutes or 221.21 miles.,... so not really that far.

2 hr drive to Boone. The mtns in SSW Virginia may be just a bit closer.

Sorry I can't help with the answer about retirees and GSO.

There are some parts of Northwest Guilford County where the mountains are visible from the ground

Having recently moved FROM just south of Greensboro, I will say it really depends on WHERE in the mountains you are searching, and from WHERE in Greensboro you are beginning! As another has posted, the part of the Blue Ridge chain in VA is probably more quickly attainable than NC. And getting into the foothills by way of U.S. 52 north from Winston-Salem may be even closer.

Just west of Winston-Salem via either U.S. 421 or I-40, you start into the low level foothills of the Blue Ridge. But to be truly in the mountains, you will travel approx 1 hour further, either north, west, or even southwest from there. In fact, in my estimation, where your mom is now is probably about equidistance from mountains, either in VA, WV, or PA.

As far as things for seniors in or around Greensboro... I would say the area is improving in that department. My folks are still in NC, in the same town as my kids and I were for the last 15 years. There seems to be limited "organized" programs for seniors, or at least not much we ever found. And I worked in Greensboro, but still found things ran hot and cold in that area. Really depends on how able your mom still is, and what her interests are.

Post a bit more, and I'll see if I can help more.

Mary

Heck, Boone is the closest I think and it's a little over 2 hours. That's Mountains proper. You can try the Uwharries from here and the Pilot Mountain or Chimney Rock areas are really close. Depends on what kind of "mountains" you want.

Smile Roanokes prob. closest

Where I live in Roanoke va. is approx. 1 hr and 45 min. Just take 220-N. it will take you right to Roanoke :-) Martinsville is closer and on the way to Roanoke.. Its just at the foothills of the blue ridge.. Where as Roanoke is in the valley.

The mountains & Blue Ridge Parkway are about 54 miles (1hr) from Winston-Salem (Bus 40 & 52). Go straight up 52. Pilot Mountain is about 20-25 minutes from Winston-Salem (Bus 40 & 52).

3,000 feet in elevation and much cooler in summer & winter.
