Hello! I would like to have any advice about this area possible... Here's what we want: We are a young, artsy family looking for a beautiful, safe city with great schools and lots to do. We love the mountains and ocean and would like access to both. We also want to be in a place that has reasonable living costs. Any websites or city names would be great! Thank you!

Asheville N.C. if you are young and artsy, that is THE place you want to be. And it's in the mountains.
The real estate is a bit higher than the norm for the state, but it depends on where
you are coming from, it might be a bargain.
I live in Greensboro and love it here, but there is not a huge art culture here or a lot to do. Asheville offers both in spades.

Sorry superk, the poster mentioned "young and arty" and Asheville automatically sprung to mind. Please leave my reply up as it might be an option they might not be aware of.

I'd think that if you're "young and arty" then where they already are in Athens would work. I dunno ...

Yeah, Athens is pretty good for the artsy stuff.. great music scene, but it's just not where we want to be. There isn't much for people who aren't involved in UGA. The schools here are dreadful and the summers are nuts. Plus, there are no mountains OR ocean! I want at least one! ; ) As for Asheville, I think that's where we were thinking about mostly, but I really wanted to ask around about the rest of the state also... any more ideas? Our main goal is great schools and fun stuff to do in a beautiful location.

The Triad is only 2 hours to the mountains and 3.5 hours to the beach, so consider the Triad first. Winston and Greensboro both have stuff to do and arty areas, and if you need more, there's always Raleigh (1.5 hours) or Charlotte (1.5 hours).

So, in summation, The Triad area is perfectly located in the center of the state to take advantage of all the state's resources. And it's also perfectly located in the middle of the East Coast.
