I am DONE with Charlotte and all its crap!!! Housing prices are insane and I think the city has gone insane... $1200 for a 1 bedroom apt in a crack neighborhood.... $1600-1800 for a 2 bedroom? No!
I have a Accounting degree - could sit for the CPA exam - just haven't. Looking for a medium size city that has decent jobs, housing and things to do... A friend in Winston-Salem said check out W-S & GBO...
My 1st question is what areas to avoid - when I moved to Charlotte in 2002 I was told to avoid the East Side and specific areas on the West side of town... and that still holds true! Are there specific areas of GSO to avoid? Better neighborhoods? I will be renting at least for the first year, until I get my bearings. It will be myself and a small dog so I'd like a small yard, 2 bedroom is fine...
I live in NW Greensboro just off Battleground. There are small houses in my neighborhood, Garden Homes, that might work for you. There are several for rent right now.
From what I can tell, generally the northwest section of G-boro is safest. I could be completely wrong though. I just research every now and then as I want to eventually buy property there.
I'll echo NW Greensboro for safety as well. We've been here since last October and it is quite safe here, albeit a little dull (it's a typical suburb - the usual chain restaurants & stores). There's more interesting stuff as you get closer to the city's core. You might not save a huge amount of money compared to Charlotte, but it is possible to find a nice 2-bedroom rental in this part of town for about 1000-1100/month. One-bedrooms can be in the 800/900 range.
Apartments closer to downtown are pretty affordable as well - some one-bedroom units within walking distance to all the action go for around $1100/month or even less.
Heck you could live downtown for about 1200 and most nice places in Greensboro are 850 to 1000. I can post a list of nice places tonight if i have time. I am moving to greensboro as well i moved to charlotte for 2 years or so so coming home.
Lindley Park, which is west of UNCG, west of downtown, is close to just about everything in Greensboro if you're not immediately downtown, so regardless of where your job is in Greensboro, it would be pretty centrally located. It is not the hassle to commute from one side of Greensboro to another like it would be in Charlotte, but it would be a nice perk if you can avoid it. It looks like there area some decent small houses for rent for about $1,000 a month or a bit more, some include 3 bedrooms (but may only have 1 bathroom).
Not real familiar with downtown living in Winston but I have heard they are decently priced in the downtown area in regards to apts and I know some that work for the City of Winston and the jobs for Finance are located at city hall which is downtown. You could maybe even walk to work depending on where you live in downtown
