I have found an apartment that I really like (at least from online) and will be checking it out in person this weekend. I will probably be working in Greensboro and wondered if the commute will be horrible - take into consideration, I lived and commuted in Atlanta for 20 years..... I realize I'm spoiled living 3.5 miles from work in Charlotte - and I know probably won't find that again...

It really depends on where in High Point and where in Greensboro. Those factors could literally mean the difference between a 10 minute commute and a 45 minute commute. Generally, traffic is super light here though.

Both of those cities have very widespread city limits, so as HRVT pointed out it's hard to say how long your daily drive will be. Definitely nail down exactly where the job is located. Commuting in this area is generally very smooth, save for a couple of problem areas. For example, checking Google Maps Traffic right now (4:45pm), there is mostly green everywhere.

Northwest HP to downtown GSO every day. Takes me about 1/2 hour. Usually not much traffic. Also, if you have lived in Atlanta and Charlotte, the traffic here will seem like nothing to you.

KL77 is correct, but if you are looking at multiple places before deciding on where to live, odds are usually better in the Greensboro area compared to Charlotte to find a place that you like within your price range and in quick commuting distance. The reasons include easier commuting, it doesn't take nearly as long to go from one area of town to another, and the prices are noticeably more reasonable than in Charlotte unless you're taking a significant pay cut.

Jowel, I'd better not be taking a pay cut... that's one of the reasons I'm leaving Charlotte, not making the $$$ I want and housing prices have skyrocketed.... crazy prices. people keep telling me to buy a place - but maintenance and upkeep aren't something I can do easily myself and find myself getting ripped off by "reliable handymen"...I'm sick of fighting traffic to run errands on the weekend or go out to dinner during the week... you can't get around and it will stay this way for awhile since so many roads are under construction or set to be under construction. since I moved back to Charlotte in 2015 I find the "I'm the important person' attitude has over taken common courtesy. Ready for a change.

Okay. I wasn't sure what your situation was. All I meant was that the cost of living has risen more in Charlotte than the Triad (specifically housing costs whether renting or owning), so that's something to consider. And I agree with you that there's a somewhat more relaxed vibe in the Triad than Charlotte, depending on what area you're in.

Greensboro and Winstons high quality of life and low housing prices is why both cities are going to be a major threat in 5 years.
