If you're leaning towards TN, I think the TN River Valley area is an exceptionally beautiful area for semi remote living, especially around Chattanooga. That area is midway between Nashville and Atlanta, so you have reasonable proximity to two large international airports (about 2 hrs in both direction) and a regional airport in Chattanooga.

I would also look in Davie County which is right outside of Forsyth County. They have tons of large plots of land out there and it is only 15 minutes to downtown Winston.

I'm currently in a big city in Florida and it's just way too hot and trafficky. No privacy. The road/housing development construction is endless here. I used to live in Western NC for a few years but it was a little "too" remote and hilly. I need a happy medium. My mom works at a Veterans hospital in Florida and would like to transfer to NC or TN at some point. I don't want her to be too far from me (she lives alone as well) or my sister who lives near Raleigh.

-5+ acres with room to build 2 houses on
-30 min to a city/international airport
-good hospitals in the city
-VA hospital nearby
-Decent restaurants or shopping would be nice for mom (I am a trained chef and do most shopping online)
-Crime is a concern as a single female but prob not a deal breaker

As far as nightlife or a social scene, I'm basically a multimillionaire recluse. I work from home, create my own entertainment, travel when bored. I'm looking for a place I can put down roots for the next decade or two. I have lived in tiny towns, suburbs, and big cities and I just prefer my peace and quiet to being in a cool, trendy city. I like volunteering and being outdoors.

Which cities sound like what I'm looking for? I'm looking at Spartanburg, Nashville area, Knoxville, Piedmont. Not Asheville or too in the mountains. I went to the triangle, seemed to have nothing esp interesting or unique about it. Charlotte doesn't have much in the way of large vacant lots for sale.
Where should I visit?
Charlotte has a new VA Facility. Look west of Charlotte.
