My husband and I planning on relocating to Winston Salem from Nicaragua. We have a 2-year old daughter. Is there a strong Latino community in Winston Salem? Any recommendations on certain neighborhoods to look at or cultural groups to reach out to?
Yes, there definitely is!
Try reaching out to the Hispanic League in Winston-Salem. They’re a non-profit that help the Latino community better themselves through education, promoting culture, family assistance, and general help to community members. They host an annual “fiesta” every year with an average attendance of about 20,000, making it the largest Hispanic event in the triad. Perfect opportunity to volunteer and get involved. They also host formal galas, Zumba events, Hispanic musical and art events, and charity events.
There's also a handful of really good authentic restaurants in Winston-Salem. La Perlita is where to go for authentic tacos. I used to work on the South side so the Cuchifritos spot is on Old Lexington Rd. if you want Puerto Rican/Dominican fare. It's pretty good. If you like Salvadorian food (I love papusas), check out El Triunfo. The Mambo Cafe is popular, but I've never had the food. Bienvenidos a Winston-Salem!
If you’re into Latin dancing, check out bongos. They’re a night club in downtown Winston. They have salsa classes on Wednesday and a fun way to meet some of the locals.

The tortas are large and yummy at La Perlita as are the tacos. Definitely had to check them out because the parking lot is never empty.
