We are a couple (with a small dog) at retirement age and planning to move to NC from UT in early 2020. Our plan is to rent before purchasing a home. We have friends outside of Mooresville, but also feel drawn to Chapel Hill area. Our plan is to rent in a safe, not too expensive place at the 1/2 way point between the two which we believe is Greensboro. Are there any recommendations on cities and/or specific properties in that area Places to avoid? Thank you.
In general, you'll find the safer, nicer, more desirable neighborhoods in Greensboro on the west and northwest side of the city, as well as the smaller towns of Summerfield and Oak Ridge.
What is "not too expensive" and how many bedrooms are you looking for (what size apartment, house, etc.)? What type of atmosphere do you like (larger city, small town, new vs. older established area, suburb/bedroom community, country area, etc.)?
That would help us help you narrow down the area that's best for you.
These are all very subjective and conditional Q's...
and the largest part of why renting for a year or more to learn your way around is so wise.
And be prepared for renting in two different locations before committing on a purchase.

Right now, we have budgeted up to up $1,000. Not driving 20 miles for groceries would be preferred. Pools, tennis courts, being near nightlife, are not our thing. We enjoy quiet and beauty of nature. That said, we can sacrifice for a year or so - have spent that last 10 living in houses that we were rehabbing - so a 1 bedroom with flooring and functional kitchen/bath will work.
I have heard good things about the safety of Summerfield and Oak Ridge but could not find any listings. Would you have any suggestions on that? Also (on paper) Elon looks very attractive. It also seems to have more rentals. So perhaps we should consider being closer to Burlington? I forgot to add we are coming for a week in August to look around. Thank you.
$1,000 is more than adequate for a budget, especially for a 1 bedroom. My concern would be if you had said you'd like to stay under $500 or $600 as some posters do, and then your choices for a safe area diminish considerably. Summerfield and Oak Ridge are nice areas but are where you're more likely to see large owner-occupied single-family homes and not many rentals.
Really if you're simply looking for a good halfway point between Mooresville and Chapel Hill, Greensboro is one option but there are other options (Kernersville, Archdale, High Point, Thomasville, Lexington, Asheboro, Wallburg, Gibsonville, etc.) where there are good options in your price range in each of those areas, with each area having a little different feel that you may really like or dislike depending on your preference. It really would be a good investment of time to spend a day or two just driving and looking around at these places, stopping in the stores, talking to locals, etc. to see which area you like to try to narrow it down.
The Guilford College-Oak Ridge area is a beautiful section of NW Greensboro that's heavily wooded with gentle rolling hills and an uncrowded back to nature feel, yet in close proximity to plenty of amenities like grocery stores, retail and restaurants. There's a good number of apartment rentals as well...
