Hello all, we need some advice. We are a interracial married couple. Our age group is 39-45 We don't have any children and currently live in South Central Pennsylvania. We both have been eye balling different states for quite a while and looking to relocate around the end of the year lord willing. I was born and raised a city girl (NJ) who enjoys simple nightlife, weekend getaways, shopping, basic fun things etc. We have a small dog and we both enjoy some good food and occasional drinks, jazz clubs, bowling, concerts, amusement parks, fairs, flea markets, camping, gaming, mini golf etc. Husband born in small town from Wisconsin he's pretty much a gamer nerdy introvert type. We love to meet people and be social have friends. People are not too friendly if you are not from here. We are open to renting at first and see how it goes. Budget is $1200 for renting are there any suggestions for some suburban to rural areas that offers a peaceful low crime, diverse, and STRONG internet? Quality healthcare is a plus. We have lived in Wilmington back in 2014 but at that time the job market was struggling. If this is the wrong section of NC that i am posting please let me know. Lexington is one of the places we are sorta looking at.

So any constructive feedback is appreciated thanks for your time..

We are looking for that go out and have fun then come home to "quiet " QOL type situation.

As far as employment goes I am a CDL A truck driver, customer service background, medical insurance background. Husband is IT background and manufacturing and yes we are currently employed. Was wondering if there is any good place neighborhoods of interest. Transferring employment would not be a issue.

My experience is that the internet can be iffy in the Triad. Is your husband working from home?

Personally, I would suggest that you explore Kernersville. I am new to NC and like the vibe there.

I agree. Kernersville is a nice town nestled in between the two largest cities in the Triad, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. It would be a short drive to either city.

Here's some points I read into your question.

Winston-Salem is home to a medical school with a teaching hospital at Wake Forest U. Greensboro has plenty of entertainment options, but you do not need to be in the city:

As an inter-racial couple, I assume you would like to be able to socialize with both black and white friends. G'boro and Winston-Salem have slightly larger black population than white, and there is a historically black college nearby. Kernersville has a higher white population. The problem I saw with Asheville is that it has a much higher percentage of whites, limiting some social options.

The Triad has a fairly liberal Democart in Congress, Kathy Manning in the 6th District, if politics matters to the couple.

The Triad has many sports options for college basketball fans. The cost of real estate is much more reasonable than Asheville or the Raleigh-Durham area, both for renting and buying. There are probably good job options for both members of the couple, as they have varied experience. The Triad is more of a manufacturing based economy that the other cities, if that helps the IT partner.

I am also discounting Charlotte and Durham for this couple. Even though they are diverse cities, the cost of real estate is much higher.

I live in Greensboro. I use a local company called Lumos (formerly North State) with no complaints ever. I've had 1 outage in 7 years due to chipmunks chewing through the cable. The worker fixed it so that won't happen again. I work from home too. I highly recommend them over the mega companies.

I was raised here, left and came back to care for aging parents. Feel free to message me with questions.

There is an outstanding HCBU here, NCAT. Winston Salem State University is in Winston.

I would discount Charlotte also because of cost. But I will mention that Charlotte is a short drive away for entertainment on occasion if you locate to the Triad. Before Covid, Charlotte had 3 jazz bars downtown. Now there is one. But some other clubs have live jazz but not every night. There is a jazz bar in Plaza Midwood that has live jazz on Monday nights that is very good and reasonably priced. I think you will enjoy the Triad. Good luck and I believe you will have made a good choice to locate there.
