I saw on reddit someone has the same computer case that I bought but no one has answered. AA states carry on is 22X 14 X 9. How likely is it that even though my computer case is shorter but slightly wider will it be allowed as a carry on? It is the Samsonite Spinner 3.0 measures 17.5" x 16" x 8.7". I worry about the width and can't find what the dimensions of the bins are in a 737-800. Any help appreciated. I can still return the case for something different but really like it if it works!

It's been my experience that when flying an ERJ-175 out of PTI on AA, any carry on, with the exception of soft sided duffle bags and the like, are checked and tagged at the gate. This can be an issue if you have a tight connection because you have to wait for them to unload gate-checked bags. Most AA flights out of PTI are ERJ-175s (Embraer).

If it doesn't fit in the sizer at the airport which is 22x14x9, the staff could technically charge you for the bag as checked luggage. It depends on the gate agent and their mood / desire to enforce.
