Hi - I will be visiting Greensboro in October for my nieces wedding. Besides the family affaie I want to explore the area so plan to add days onto the trip (I live on the west coast). I hear that the mountains near by are beautiful and Ashville is not to be missed. Any suggestions on where in the Mountains (appalaician trail area) is close for a days drive (orover night) and things to see and do while in Greensboro. I willl have a rental car but have never traveled in that part of the country before. thanks in advance
That's so exciting. October is very beautiful here in NC. The mountain area is a great choice. And while I realize you are from the west coast, I think you should see the east coast. The beaches of NC are unlike any other. Make sure you take in breakfast at sunrise on the beach.

Boone is a small quaint mountain college town with much character, as well as Brevard & Black Mountain; Jefferson is beautiful; Asheville can't be missed; drive the Blue Ridge Parkway (watch speed limits); lots of hiking everywhere North Carolina Hiking | North Carolina Hikes , North Carolina Hiking Trail Finder ; Okracoke & the Outer Banks are out of this world; Greensboro/Winston Salem area has lots of restaurants, bars & other things to do.
I would skip Asheville and instead head over to Blowing Rock/Boone. It is an easy drive due west of Greensboro (Hwy 421) and was my favorite day-trip when I lived in GSO. That area is particularly nice in October. The Blue Ridge Parkway intersects Hwy 421 east of Boone -- you can get on the BRP and head south fom there, visit Blowing Rock a short drive to the south, and head further south from there (Moses Cone house, viaduct, Grandfather Mtn, Linville Falls). That would be a 2-day trip to see all of that area. Just make sure to get hotel resevrations early if it is in mid-October since that is peak "leaf season."
One of my other favorite places was Old Salem in Winston-Salem. And Greensboro has a few nice public parks and gardens that are good for an afternoon walk (Bicentennial Gardens was my favorite).
I espcially agree with JAS about the parkway and Boone. Even a day trip is worth the ride over.
And good to see you around JAS!
