Hi all, I am a 23 professional moving to Greensboro for a job next month. I am moving here from Charleston, SC. I have only been to GSO one time and I liked the look of the downtown area but will be working on Center Point road, out by the airport. I am overwhelmed by all the places to live. I am not opposed to living downtown and driving to work, but how is the traffic? Also, would living downtown be a better idea than in the burbs if going out on the weekends is something I would want to do? Are there any neighborhoods close to downtown? CityView apartments look very nice but are kind of pricey. I could afford it but I don't know that I would want to. Thanks.
Traffic in Greensboro is seldom bad, and you would be reverse commuting (going against rush hour traffic) if you're going from downtown to the airport area. There are lots of options to live around downtown - Southside as you mentioned where CityView is, also look around UNCG at College Hill (i.e. Wafco Mills), the Fisher Park area has some affordable properties/older houses that have been split into apartments. All those neighborhoods are definitely walkable to downtown.
Here's some neighborhoods that you should consider: Lindley Park, Fisher Park, Westerwood, Latham Park, College Hill, Aycock, Sunset Hills.
All are (mostly) semi-urban neighborhoods around downtown. Close proximity to downtown and also the suburban conveniences like the mall and Friendly Center.
City View apartments are really really nice. So worth the money.
If you are looking for a home to rent as opposed to an apartment, look in Fisher Park, Westerwood, Aycock Historic District, Lindley Park, even Glenwood if you like. All are close to downtown and have a good mix of folks.
Ahhh to be 23 again...
