The Moravian Church is the oldest Protestant church in history. It started because Jan Hus, a Catholic priest, wanted to preach in the vernacular instead of in Latin, so that people could actually understand Mass. For this, he was killed. The Moravian Church led the way in educating women, promoting non-violence, creating a system of shared wealth, and espousing a doctrine based on love. Its southern headquarters is Winston-Salem, and I doubt you will be able to live there for long without making your way to the historic settlement of Old Salem and tasting Moravian baked goods, which are out of this world.
I have a Moravian heritage of which I'm proud, and I truly, deeply love the Moravian Church, but I left it some years ago to join the Unity movement, because Unity seems to have taken up where the Moravian Church left off, or so it appears to me. Part of the reason I left the Moravian Church is because of how they treated my former pastor, who came out. He got over it and is still Moravian, and is in some ways far more of a conservative thinker than many hets I know. So being gay does not always translate into a completely open mind.
At Unity, tolerance for diversity is absolutely a no-brainer. They bring not just Western scripture, but Eastern scripture as well--into individual daily experience in ways that are transforming. And that's what I wanted--not just bake sales, sweet traditions, and someplace to go on Sundays, but transformation. If my church is not challenging me not just weekly but daily to examine my assumptions and actions, to discover who I wish to be and become that person who lives in love, then it's not really doing all it could do and I'm not either. May you be blessed in your walk and in your search.
Thanks, this us exactly the list I was looking for. I am a progressive United Methodist and am a bit worried about finding a church I feel comfortable here Greensboro. I'll try one of these tomorrow.
