We want to move to NC from Hilo Hawaii.
Here is a breakdown of some of our expenses:
electric bill- nearly 300.00 year round (no heating or cooling)
water is 60.00 every other month
Sewer 55.00 every other month
cable/phone/internet bundle 150.00/month.
Groceries are costly:
milk 5.00/gal on sale
eggs 2.50/dozen
cheapest bread 2.50/loaf
Gas is almost 3.89/gal for regular unleaded
Culture shock? How will a family made up of a Portuguese father and a Native Hawaiian/portuguese mother be received in NC?
I am a Chemistry teacher at a private school -thus no need for state certification- and would like to teach in NC.
We are both born and raised in Hawaii-lived here most of our lives (except for stint in the military and 5 years in Oregon). We need a change and opportunites for our kids.
Any suggestions as to where to move to? I have been looking into the Piedmont Triad area? Possibly Winston-Salem?

Based on your costs, I think you'll find the cost of living here to be significantly cheaper. I live in High Point in a decent sized 4 bedroom house and my electric/water/sewer all lumped together avg a bit under $300/month. Groceries and gas are definately cheaper here. I'm sure you've already looked online at homes for sale, so you know what your price range is for that. I can't directly address the culture shock issue since I've never been to Hawaii, but I can say that this is a fairly diverse area, so from my experience I wouldn't expect that to be an issue. I will recommend you take a look at the entire Triad area (High Point, Greensboro, W-S, Kernersville, etc). Traffic is rarely an issue and there are definate advantages and disadvantages to the different school systems in the area.

Good luck

Winston Salem would be a good fit for you. With the presence of Wake Forest University, two major medical centers, high tech/biomed firms, etc. the city has a nice share of diversity. A good example of that is the presence of a Whole Foods Market in the area just north of 321-Business 40. WFM doesn't open just anywhere, and the demographics are well studied. Focus on the NW/SW side of town. I can't address the school situation, but recommend the website GreatSchools as a source.

I agree with niceguy, the Greatschools website is a good resource. I've compiled a bunch of the information off of the GreatSchools.org website. We're using it now to help us decide where we want to move to in the area. If you'd like me to share the spreadsheet I have with the compiled data, I'd be happy to. Just send me a PM with your email and I'll send it to you.
