At what age can a child take drivers ed. My son is 14 going to 9th, and can he get a work permit? I would rather he not work however, he wants the experience.

SCDMV Online: Beginner's Permit

At 14 he'll find it hard to get a job since he can only work so many hours.

FYI google is your friend ;-)

You aren't searching correctly. If you go to google and type in "South carolina work permit" first site leads you here U.S. Department of Labor - Employment Standards Administration (ESA) - Wage & Hour Divisions (WHD) - Employment/Age Certificate January 1, 2008 (http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/state/certification.htm - broken link) Scroll down to South Carolina and you find no provisions (laws) for one.

Now type in "working under 16 in south carolina" and you'll find the 6th site mentioned is an official South Carolina Department of Labor which gives you restrictions on working hours and type of work

South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (http://www.llr.state.sc.us/Labor/Wages/index.asp?file=cll.htm - broken link)

Be prepared, however, in this economy given the restrictions on your working hours that you won't be hired. This doesn't mean you can't work over the summer. Babysitting and mowing neighbors lawns are all good ways to make some money. If you price yourself below what professional services charge for mowing lawns you might be able to pick up a few.

Hope I don't seem harsh, but google really can provide you with a wealth of information if you figure out what is is exactly you are looking for. Keep searches concise and to the point. That's how anyone here would find the answers.

You don't need a work 'permit'. You can get a job at 14 or 15 that allows you to work up to 18 hours a week or three hours a day (until 7:30 PM) during the school year, or up to 40 hours a week (8 hours a day, I believe) during the summer.

It'll be much easier to find a job in the summer.

You can take driver's ed before you get your permit. You must be 15 years old to get your permit though. To get your license before 17, you must take 14 hours of driver's education. (6 hours driving, 8 classroom). Once you have driver's ed, you may take the driver's test to get your restricted (or conditional as it is now called) after you have held your permit for 180 days.

When you turn 16, you may apply for a waiver so that you can drive after restricted hours. (Restricted hours are 6 PM Standard Time and 8 PM DST And begin at 6 AM year-round). The waiver is for school activities or a job and allows you to drive unaccompanied until midnight.

After you hold your license for one year, you may apply to have your full adult license.

Permit: Allows you to drive any time with a parent or until midnight with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.
Restricted/Conditional: Allows to drive by yourself from 6 AM-8 PM (DST) or 6 AM-6 PM (Standard).
Waiver: Allows you to drive from 6 AM to midnight.
Full: Allows you to drive anytime.

BTW: For driver's ed, try Larry Pearson. He has a 100% pass rate the first time and will help students "off the clock" if they need it (without charging).
