I would second searching AutoTrader.com. I have sold 1 car and other family members have bought and sold sold several cars successfully using AutoTrader. I would put in a 300 mile searching range and not be too detailed in your search requirements. My sister bought a used BMW from a doctor for $3000 because that's the price the dealer offered on a trade in and he didn't want to sell it to the dealer who would turn around and sell it for double the price, so he kept it and sold it to my sister for her teenaged daughter for the same price because he'd rather give her a break than the dealer. My dad also bought a Lexus for what the seller owed on it (way more than $3000, but still a good deal less than what he would have paid at a dealership) because the guy had lost his job and was desperate for cash. Any time you can pay cash you can usually find a good deal. It also helps to put the word out with your friends and coworkers that you're looking for a used vehicle. Sometimes people may not be actively trying to sell a vehicle but have a spare vehicle that they would decide to sell if the opportunity arises. You might also call North Hills automotive. You can give them a price and set of criteria and they will find the vehicle for you.

Not sure what area exactly you will be moving to; however, there actually are some good used care dealers despite what most people will tell you. They are hard to find, though. I live in the Town of Lyman in Spartanburg County. There is a small dealership located on Hwy 29 just before Locust Rd next to the Fast Lube of Lyman. The owner is Bill. He specializes in purchasing police cars in bulk, fixing them up according to other companies/departments needs and shipping them out. He will allow you to buy cars from him. He often has Crown Vic's, Chevy Tahoes, Dodge Intrepids, and other similiar models. Because they come from police departments, they are usually in excellent condition. He also has a deal with a local restoration guy who can get you new paint jobs for cheap . . .

Be careful with used fleet vehicles. They may have been well maintained, but expect a significant percentage of them to have high miles (lots of use/abuse).
