I'm looking for opinions on who is the best orthopedic surgeon in the area. I've heard good things about Piedmont Orthopedics, especially Dr. Baumgarten. Does anyone know of a better orthopedist, or are these guys the best around?
It depends on what type of orthopedic specialist you are looking for. At Piedmont Dr. Jennings is the most sought-after knee specialist. Dr. Tollison specilizes in sports injuries and does a lot of ankle repairs. Dr. Batson does a lot of hand surgeries. At Carolina Orthopedic Dr Posta is the best shoulder specialist around and he does a lot of sports injury surgery. Dr O'Boyle specializes in orthopedic trauma surgeries. There are also good doctors at Steadman Hawkins. Dr. Gearydid a knee replacement on my dad and he was impressed. They are affiliated with GHS and only operate at GHS facilities. If you are looking for a Hand Surgeon Dr. Sanders at The Hand Center is very good, as is Dr. John Evans at Foothills Orthopedic. A lot of it is a matter of opinion. One person will swear by a surgeon that someone else will really dislike. There are some surgeons who have very poor "bedside manners" but are brilliant surgeons and vice versa.
Wow, I didn't realize they were that specialized. I was told that I would be needing hip joint replacement and I wanted to get a second opinion from the "best" surgeon around. I'd probably want to get knee work done at the same time, but I don't know if that's possible.

You cannot get a hip replacement and knee surgery at the same time because you need full use of your knees in order to rehabilitate your hip and vice versa. If both were immobile at the same time it's possible that you wouldn't be able to regain full strength and range of motion in either. You also have to have full use of your arms and hands with either surgery so that you can use crutches and progress to a walker until you are able to bear weight on the affected joint.

I'll have to get back to you next week. I work at a hospital and I'll ask some of the physical therapists. I haven't personally had anyone close to me have a hip replacement. The other docs I mentioned I have had personal experience with so I am more knowledgeable about them. I'll ask around and let you know.
I highly recommend Frank Armocida at Village Orthopaedics (part of Spartanburg Regional Hospital System but at their Village Hospital location on Highway 14). I am a nurse anesthetist who works with him and have watched him operate many times. He is fellowship trained in joint replacement, pays close attention to detail and his patients love him. PS - I am sure he could tell you better but you may find that replacing your hip fixes your knee problems as well...often knee problems originate with hip problems as unlikely as that seems! Good luck!
We worked with a few dr. at steadman hawkins when our daughter fractured her tibia/fibula playing soccer. They were all very knowledgable. Even had a pediatric ortho etc. We were impressed and know many atheletes from overseas go to them.
Thanks for all of your feedback. I've made an appt with one of the surgeons in Greenville, so hopefully I'll get some resolution soon.
