I'm a boomer and I like a real paper newspaper. In the past few years, it's been emotionally painful to cut back to getting only the Sunday paper. When my cut-rate Sunday deal for the G'ville News expired a few months ago, I started buying the Charlotte Observer on Sundays. Since I'm from NC, that suits me better anyway for a lot of reasons, even though I'm not a "Charlotte person." I don't usually like to say "never" but I think I'm pretty safe in saying that I'll never pay for the G'ville News again.
Newspapers are a dieing industry, stop buying the paper no need for it. When the boomers are all gone so will the papers, for now they will seek to make profits somehow and if that is by raising prices for the small group out there that still read them then so be it. It's not like they would gain readers if they lowered prices.
pretty much sums it up.
If the newspaper was smart, they'd start doing Giveaways in the paper. it'll raise interests.
Conversation I had with someone giving away copies of a local paper in a supermarket:
Paper Guy: "Want a free copy of the Tribune?"
Me: "No thanks, I get my news online."
Paper Guy: "Sunday paper has comics ..."
Me. "I have a bookmarks folder set up with the comics I read every day."
Paper Guy: "Well, you get all those coupons with the Sunday paper ..."
Me: "I can print all the coupons I want from websites."
Paper Guy: (silence)
I am BTW on the older edge of the Boomer generation, and haven't purchased a newspaper in years. I think it's more the Silent Generation (born 1925-1945) who read papers than my generation. And even the Silent Generation's readership has been steadily falling:
Of course it went up. Everything is going up -just check out the grocery stores. Seems like everything you pick up these days is three bucks or more. I think we can blame the price of fuel because it effects the cost of everything including the ink that goes into the paper.
I'm an older boomer, and really like the newspaper, but have weaned myself off of it due to the rising costs on something I don't really need. I mostly like the paper for the comics and puzzles, and- Guess what? All of that is available on-line, for free.
Newspapers are caught in a death spiral- rising costs and diminishing readership. When they jack prices and charge to view their website, they only hasten the inevitable.
I've never been a newspaper reader, but I would think the coupons would still pay for the cost increase. Now magazines, I definitely prefer to have those in print!
This isn't surprising. All newspapers are losing money, and charging more for the print version is a sign that they're struggling to create revenue. The facts:
-Newspapers are losing readers daily
-They can't charge as much for ad revenue as they once could
-People aren't paying for online content when they can get news for free via free websites
My hope is that Gannett will start to drop newspapers soon in order to curb their money loss. Hopefully, The Greenville News will be one of them. I'm ready for The Greenville News building to be empty, so we can tear it down and build something really nice there.

I have not thought of that, prime real estate, Greenville would be better served with the news gone so that area good be developed. Now I really hope they fail soon, or at least downsize and move.
